Easy, useful tips to make gardening fun!

Taking cuttings home?

  • Cut the top off a raw potato
  • Use a chopstick to poke holes in the raw potato
  • Insert your cuttings in the holes
  • They will stay moist for several hours until you can get them planted
Take care of those unsightly weeds:
*** The definition of a weed? *Any* plant, even an ornamental one, that grows where it is unwanted! ***
  • Always water *before* weeding. This will make it easier to pull with its entire root system intact
  • Sprinkle salt on weeds that grow in paved areas
  • Pour boiling water over weeds that grow in paved areas
  • When removing weeds, it is important to get all of it so that it will not regenerate itself
How to get extra life out of that tired, ole tomato plant:
  • Mix one level tablespoon of Epsom Salt and one level tablespoon of cement dust in 1 gallon of water
  • Mix well
  • Pour this mixture in a ring one foot away from plants
  • Repeat this procedure once a month
How to get rid of unwanted insects:
  • Get a toad or two for your garden
  • They'll need water and shelter
  • If you do not have a pond, simply sink several pans into the soil in a remote corner of your garden
  • Fill these with water and rocks
  • For shelter, simply place a broken flowerpot upside down in a shady part of your garden
  • Be sure there is a place for the toads to climb through
Ladybugs (Ladybirds) are great for your garden:
  • If you do not have any, import some in!
  • They eat insects and spiders
  • Some wild flowers that they enjoy are Queens Anne's Lace and Goldenrod
Hold mould and plant odour at bay in your garden bouquet:
  • Add a lump of charcoal to your vase water
  • This will prevent mould and the odour of plant decay
  • Use this tip also when rooting cuttings in water :-)
Planting bulbs the natural way:
  • Always plant bulbs in groups, not singly in rows
  • For an even more natural look - toss a handful on the ground
  • Plant them where they fall
